Digital Photography
In sifting through a vast archive of digital photos captured in Japan, this collection of images was curated. Initially, the process felt like a search for the most aesthetically pleasing compositions. However, as the collection came together, it became clear that this project wasn't about capturing perfect snapshots, but about translating the complex reality of how Japan actually revealed itself.
As someone who spent significant time (years of college courses) and effort studying the language, I arrived in Japan with a distinct set of expectations. Once there, the physical space challenged everything I thought I knew. There is a profound disparity between the Japan of academic study and the Japan one actually inhabits, the lived experience is far more intricate, textured, and overwhelming. To capture that depth, this collection looks at both the atmosphere of the environment and the specific, everyday things that populate it, finding meaning in the relationship between place and object.
In this collection of photos, the aim is to communicate that realization. The hope is for the viewer to feel the beauty and the awe, but also to recognize that these images are only a fleeting glimpse into a much larger, deeper reality that is still being processed. This collection does more than just show what was seen; it invites you to feel some of the weight and texture of that lived experience.
